Sustainability in Action: The Power of Small Changes
At Axcentive, we are committed to driving responsible practices throughout our supply chain. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) engagement, we have focused on sustainable packaging solutions to reduce our environmental impact — particularly carbon emissions. We believe that even the smallest adjustments can have a profound impact on the environment. Small steps can indeed lead to significant positive changes, especially when it comes to packaging and sustainability. Each seemingly minor adjustment — when scaled across a product line or in a supply chain — can have a ripple effect that adds up to a major impact over time.
Reviewing and optimizing packaging has been an area we have been working on in order to contribute to lowering emissions across the supply chain. Here are examples of two actions implemented over the past months.
Eliminating Single-Use Components. In agreement with our distribution network, we have decided to remove dosing spoons and pitchers made of plastic from our packaging. These items were often single-used and rarely reused, making their environmental cost high relative to their utility. By removing dosing items, less plastic is used which means fewer emissions from manufacturing, molding, and transporting those components.
Our packs are nowadays lighter. Removing these items reduces the overall weight of each unit. By removing pitchers from our drums, we are cutting 2.23mty of plastic waste over the next 10 years .
Finally eliminating these parts contribute nowadays to a faster, more efficient process with less operation at the workshop.

Optimizing the dimensions of carton boxes based on the size of the sample has been another step. Benefits are numerous. By ensuring that the carton box is perfectly sized for the product, less cardboard is used per unit. Smaller packaging means as well that fewer resources are used in production (less wood, paper, and chemicals), which lowers the emissions tied to material manufacturing.
Less empty space inside each box means that less bubble wrap, foam, or other padding might be needed to secure the product. This results in less packaging waste in the form of excess filler materials. Optimizing box dimensions ensures products arrive safely while keeping packaging as minimal and efficient as possible.
Finally smaller boxes not only reduce material and transportation costs but also help optimize storage space in warehouses, leading to fewer storage-related emissions. This creates both financial and environmental savings.
Our mission is to inspire both internal teams and industry partners to make small, consistent changes that, together, can lead to a larger transformation. Sustainability is not just about big leaps; it’s about taking intentional, continuous steps towards a greener future.

Infinite Shine
The ceramic coating EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+ by Axcentive makes hull maintenance more sustainable, saves costs, delays the need for refitting, and reduces CO2 emissions. A thickness of just two microns is enough to keep the hull above water gleaming for years.
Axcentive originates from a management buy-out of Akzo in 2004. “For the past 10 years, we have been developing ceramic coatings,” says Marco van de Pol from Axcentive. “EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+ is our most recent product and offers many advantages over what is currently available on the market.” His colleague Arno Schut adds: “The coatings are based on chemical science, in which both Marco and I are trained. Extensive research and practical experiences in America and Southern Europe show that our ceramic coating does exactly what it’s designed to do.”
Easy and cost-effective
“When a large yacht undergoes a refit, which is typically needed once every five years, the hull is sanded, filled, and repainted,” says Marco van de Pol. “These tasks are time-consuming, CO2-emitting, and expensive. With our EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+, you can delay such a refit by two years or longer. You only need 10 milliliters per square meter on a cleaned surface for optimal protection and shine again. Our coating is a single-component product, making it easy to apply. For large ships, you spray it on, and for smaller ones, you apply it with a microfiber sponge. It’s liquid when applied and dries in the air. Let’s say a hull refit costs 1 million euros; with a treatment using EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+, you’ll only spend 100,000 euros.”Long-lasting shine
“A layer of EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+ maintains its shine for two to three years, after which you can repeat the process,” says Arno Schut. “Technically, you can apply a new layer every three years indefinitely, except when there are damages to the hull. Our coating is as hard as glass, or better yet, as hard and strong as diamond, which contributes to the long-lasting shine. A thickness of two microns keeps the layer flexible, allowing it to adhere well to the surface. EXOCOAT™ Ceramic+ forms a chemical bond with the substrate without damaging it. The layer does wear down slowly, but what enters the environment is silica, or sand. This waste stream is therefore not harmful to the environment.”Innovative
The glass-hard ceramic layer is super smooth, water-repellent, UV-resistant, self-cleaning, scratch-resistant, dirt-repellent, and maintains its shine for years. “I have seen it many times in practice, such as on superyachts in Florida, so I know it’s not too good to be true,” says Marco van de Pol. “This is exactly what our coating does, making it a welcome addition to existing coating systems. The market still needs to get used to the new revolution of ceramic coating in some cases. We already apply this technology extensively on yachts, as well as on cars and other coated parts, with the primary goal of extending maintenance intervals. This significantly reduces costs and environmental emissions.”
In addition to coatings for coated parts, Axcentive also offers special ceramic coatings for glass (super water-repellent) and exhausts (dirt and soot-repellent). These ceramic coatings are also applied to yachts. For the Benelux region, Van Dongen Verf is our partner, and starting this spring, the coating will be available through shipyards and retail.

Newcastle Disease detected in Poland: Biosecurity remains key
Recently, Newcastle Disease (NCD) has been reported in Poland, the first case since the summer of 2023. This new outbreak once again highlights the importance of good biosecurity and prevention, next to vaccination.
Newcastle disease (NCD) is a disease of major importance for poultry and other birds. It is caused by specified viruses of the avian paramyxovirus type (APMV-I) of the family Paramyxoviridae. The infection is spread via direct contact with secretions, especially faeces, from infected birds or indirect contact through contaminated feed, water, equipment, vehicles, humans, fomites etc.
NCD reported in Poland
Because of its importance, NCD is a notifiable disease, according to Council Directive 82/894/EEC on the notification of animal diseases within the EU. On September 30, 2024, it was reported that this disease was confirmed in a poultry flock in Mońki, Poland. The situation was reported upon discovery that 18,300 birds in a flock of 51,900 birds had died. The remaining 33,600 birds in the flock have been depopulated.
Other control measures applied include zoning, surveillance within the restricted zone, movement control, disinfection, traceability and official destruction of animal products, according to a news release by Watt Poultry. This is Poland’s first case of Newcastle disease since the summer of 2023, when four flocks were affected.

Biosecurity and vaccination
Despite vaccination – being in most cases mandatory for commercial farms – backyard farms may hold and spread this highly infectious disease back to commercial flock. This increases the viral pressure and poses a challenge to the birds’ health. A proper vaccination protocol can give the required protection but should always be backed by biosecurity measures to facilitate a solid immune response to the vaccine. Immunity issues with other bacterial or viral challenges at the same time of the NCD vaccination are problematic and may hinder the formation of antibodies by the immune system and thus the build-up of protection against NCD.
Outside the body, shedding of vaccine may lead to dissemination of the virus to other flocks/animals. A disinfectant with particularly strong killing effect towards viruses is required under these circumstances. This is also the case when the disease has been detected on the farm. Every area on and around the farm that has had NCD must be cleaned and disinfected.
Disinfection: The Halamid® way
Most quat-based products are out of the question for this type of critical applications where a strong killing effect against viruses is required. Halamid® is different and has been specifically developed to be powerful and mild at the same time. It eradicates all major pathogens in one application round, while being safe for animals, humans and the environment. It has been registered and approved worldwide.Halamid® has proven for decades to be very effective in eradicating the NCD virus (example: UK DEFRA 1:150). To be used without moderation (at the recommended dilution rates) by both commercial farms and particularly the increasing number of small backyard farms. Its unique formula allows for a great variety of applications such as terminal disinfection by wet spraying, misting or (thermo) fogging, aerial disinfection, water system sanitation, wheel and foot dip, vehicle or egg disinfection.
Recent decelopment around EXOCOAT™ 143 and EXOCOAT™ AC
- September 2024
At the Lab we developed synergistic surface treatments for enhanced functionality. EXOCOAT™ 143 and EXOCOAT™ AC represent a two-step surface treatment system designed to optimize the performance of aluminum and various other metals. This approach leverages the complementary properties of each coating to achieve superior functionality.
EXOCOAT™ AC: This initial conversion coating utilizes a chromate-free approach based on sol-gel technology. This layer enhances the adhesion of subsequently applied coatings and promotes corrosion resistance by offering a passive barrier against aggressive environments. The specific mechanism of EXOCOAT™ AC involves sol-gel conversion of the metal surface resulting in excellent adhesion and excellent intercoat adhesion to subsequent layers.
EXOCOAT™ 143: Following the conversion coating, EXOCOAT™ 143 serves as a ceramic clearcoat. This layer possesses easy-to-clean properties, due to a low surface energy that minimizes contaminant adhesion.
EXOCOAT™ 143 is made PFAS free, in which the organometallic resin provides water and oil repellent characteristics. This property not only simplifies cleaning and maintenance but can also offer additional benefits like improved stain resistance and reduced susceptibility to fingerprint smudging. EXOCOAT™ 143 may be used as low maintenance anti-graffiti coating to which no tag adheres.
Synergy and Performance: The combined action of EXOCOAT™ AC and EXOCOAT™ 143 provides a powerful surface treatment solution. The conversion coating by EXOCOAT™ AC improves the overall adhesion and corrosion resistance of the metal substrate, while the easy-to-clean properties of EXOCOAT™ 143 offer a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing surface. This system can be particularly advantageous for applications in demanding environments or where frequent cleaning is necessary.
Material Compatibility: EXOCOAT™ AC and EXOCOAT™ 143 function well on aluminum and a variety of other metals. For optimal performance, it’s always recommended to technical team to check the compatibility for specific application and desired metals.
EXOCOAT™ AC and EXOCOAT™ 143 are both applied as thin layers (total DFT 10-15 micron) and give good corrosion protection properties with up to 3000hrs neutral salt spray resistance. Both products can be cured at room temperature with moisture from the air or can be baked at elevated temperatures, 90 to 150oC.
